The Impact You’ll Make

Serna Bio is building the world’s first map of the druggable transcriptome, systematically opening up the universe of RNA biology to small molecule drug discovery. Using our Discovery Platform, we are tackling the classically intractable targets ranging from coding and non-coding RNA. As we continue to scale we are looking to hire an intelligent, curious and delivery-minded Data Engineer to join our growing team. Your work will help leverage the insights we are generating as we build out the map of the druggable transcriptome. You will leverage your creativity and analytical thinking to craft pipelines to marshal and transform data, and will develop analysis and visualization architectures to extract insights and drive decisions. Your work will span architectures for databases, servers, large-scale processing, and visualization.

The role primarily involves the following responsibilities:

  • Develop architectures for and maintain our pipelines from NGS data
  • Build dashboards and other tooling to make data accessible and leverageable
  • NGS pipelines (e.g., Nextflow, Python, shell scripts) for HTS data analysis including but not limited to quality control, alignment, variant calling, annotation, deconvolution, etc.
  • ETL and DevOps support
  • To automate deployment and monitoring processes
  • Support the documentation, discoverability, and governance of our data assets and data initiatives
  • Aid in administering our data platforms and tooling

The Data Engineer will play a key role in delivering on our goals.

You will collaborate with experts in various technological and scientific fields, working with our new Engineering function to build a world-class systems architecture, help drive company-wide efforts centered on leveraging value from data.

You’ll be a hands-on contributor taking personal ownership for delivery of complex projects and contributing to wider business objectives

The Team You’ll Join

You will be a key member of our in silico group compromising chemical and bioinformatics experts, leading the design and implementation of the Technology supporting our discovery platform, and building differentiated in silico product offerings.

Responsibilities include building out databases, bringing structure to large volumes of HTS and NGS data. Performing diagnoses, monitoring, and managing pipelines, applications, and infrastructures from end-to-end, resolving problems and automating deployment and monitoring processes.

Ours is a highly interdisciplinary environment and your work will interface with our wet and dry labs, ensuring that digital solutions align with long-term strategic goals while also providing immediate needs for bench scientists and computational/data/ML scientists.

The Experience You’ll Need

Technical Requirements

  • Higher level degree in data or Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Experience in big data / engineering roles involving ETL, processing pipelines, data visualization, and administration of data platforms
  • Experience with genetic/genomic, single cell, multiplex, and/or clinical data
  • Expert level fluency with scripting languages such as Python and SQL and dynamic visualization frameworks such as Streamlit
  • Demonstrated proficiency in SQL to ingest and transform structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data from sources including relational databases, external APIs, JSON, XML, and delimited files
  • Advanced data manipulation skills: read in data, process and clean it, transform and recode it, merge different data sets, reformat data between wide and long, etc.
  • Experience DevOps best practices for code development, testing, implementation, and documentation including version control systems like Git
  • Exposure to an AWS or similar cloud environment
  • Curiosity to dive below the surface and proactively identify critical issues including their tactical and strategic resolutions
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Interpersonal Requirements

  • Ability to handle multiple projects at once.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience defining roadmaps, writing detailed specifications, and on time delivery, with clear go-no-go decisions on projects.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage different projects and deliver to defined timelines.
  • Happy to contribute, to build out a codebase, and to lead by example.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills e.g. can tailor the complexity of communications as and when required, whilst maintaining clarity of communication.
  • Experience working in cross-functional and distributed teams.

The Values You’ll Share

  • We are unapologetically unrealistic: We are unapologetic that our expectations for delivery are extraordinarily high. There is urgency to our existence: our ambition grounded in relentless execution of well designed experiments.
  • We are data-driven: Data trumps opinions.
  • We are humble: We understand the limitations of our knowledge and seek to learn from others to minimize them.
  • We are curious: Learning from the diverse perspectives of our fellow teammates, and from failure, is an essential part of how we make progress. At Serna Bio, we celebrate failure, mistakes, and the ability to learn from them.
We are kind: We are kind to our team, their families, each other, our communities, kindness can be making time to relax, or asking the hard questions.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to accelerate your career. You will have the opportunity to grow your career as we grow our labs.
  • The opportunity to make a difference. Your work will have a direct impact on the experiments we run, and will influence our programs destined for the clinic to affect patient outcomes.
  • A place to explore the range of your interests. We pride ourselves in an environment that cultivates curiosity, creativity and autonomy. At Serna the “why” of things is always the most important question.
  • An environment designed to broaden your perspectives. We care deeply about inclusive working practices and diverse teams. Diversity is integral to our success, and an inclusive environment allows the team to do their best work.

About Us

Serna Bio is building the world’s first map of the druggable transcriptome, systematically opening up the universe of RNA biology to small molecule drug discovery. Using our Discovery Platform, we are tackling the classically intractable targets, with an initial focus on Oncology and Rare Disease. The current toolkit for developing drugs is focused almost entirely on protein targets. However, 85% of the approximate 3 billion base pairs in the human genome encodes for RNA but not protein. Our platform enables a novel approach to understand RNA structure, function and binding sites in order to develop a new class of drugs. Targeting RNA in this way enables us to explore therapeutics for the many diseases with no known treatments.

Our mission is to develop a new class of drugs that will impact patient lives. We are curious, nimble, breaking new ground and growing fast. Come make an impact with us and be part of our story.
